The USS Yorktown at Patriots Point Charleston, SC is the Flagship of the Naval and Maritime Museum opened to the public in January 1976 and the Yorktown Served as the first ship of the Naval & Maritime Museum. 

It was not long before Patriots Point added several Historic Landmark ships making it one of the largest museums of this kind in the world.   • Planes and Flight Deck – Visit actual fighters and bombers that helped win World War II. Standing in the presence of these incredible war planes allows visitors to step back in time and imagine the constant danger and hectic work environment that pilots, aircrew and deckhands experienced aboard the Yorktown.

  • USS Clamagore – This Balao-class submarine was commissioned too late to see action during World War II. CLAMAGORE underwent GUPPY II conversion in 1948. This Greater Underwater Propulsion Program was designed to improve underwater performance. CLAMAGORE was also converted to GUPPY III. There were only nine submarines that underwent this conversion. CLAMAGORE is the only GUPPY III submarine that has been preserved in the United States.

  • Medal of Honor Museum – The Congressional Medal of Honor Museum offers interactive exhibits that tell the stories of Medal of Honor recipients. The Museum itself is located on board the USS Yorktown. It is also the home of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.

  • Vietnam Naval Support – The Vietnam Naval Support Base Camp is a true-to-scale exhibit that shows the operational and living areas of a US Naval Advanced Tactical Support Base during the Vietnam War. Visitors can see various craft used to combat the dangers encountered by those patrolling the jungle and rivers throughout the War.

  • Cold War Submarine Memorial – This tribute to the dedicated men who served in naval submarines during the Cold War is located in the heart of the Charleston harbor. This memorial was created to give overall size and shape of the USS LEWIS AND CLARK SSBN 644. There are seven educational stations surrounding the full sized replica.

From 1943 to 1975, the USS Yorktown earned 16 battle stars for service in World War II and for service off Vietnam. The Academy Award-winning documentary “The Fighting Lady” was filmed aboard the USS Yorktown.
