This Charleston Slave Museum tells the story of Charleston’s role in the inter-state slave trade by focusing on the history of the Old Slave Mart and the slave sales that occurred there. Slave auctions ended at the Old Slave Mart in November of 1863. After the Civil War, the property changed hands many times, at one point functioning as a museum featuring African and African-American arts and crafts. The City of Charleston acquired the property in 1988, recognizing the significant importance the institution of slavery has had in Charleston’s history.
